The Department of Anthropology's sociocultural program has distinctive strengths in gender studies, medical anthropology, and economic anthropology that have been developed since the 1980s and continue to distinguish our program nationally.  Each specialization spans traditional anthropological subfields and enhances the college's core mission in the areas of globalization and cultural diversity. Course offerings related to these areas are broad and in the case of feminist anthropology can lead to a departmental concentration. Additional expertise in the department lies in the area of cultural politics (especially in relation to indigenous peoples), Latin America and diaspora studies.
